Kaolin Clays are widely used as functional fillers in adhesives, caulks, and sealants. Viscosity and rehology of adhesive systems is of paramount importance. The choice of the correct kaolin clay will affect these properties in the production and final application.

During production, when all ingredients are being mixed, it is desirable to have functional fillers that aid in the dispersion of the other ingredients by providing the correct amount of shear during mixing. The slight charge differential between the edge and surface of the clay aids in dispersion of the clay and other components of the mix, as well as improve the rheology. Kaolin clays are ideal, cost-effective, and functional fillers and pigments for adhesives, caulks, and sealants due to their particle size and platy structure.

During application, kaolin clay will provide the correct viscosity, prevent slumping, and fill voids, while providing visual contrast to easily identify where the material has been applied. The platy nature of kaolin also provides exceptional barrier properties to the caulk or sealants, as well as improving the strength of the adhesive film. Product Information 

Thiele Kaolin provides many kaolin products that can provide the attributes required for your adhesive or sealant product. Below are a few Thiele Kaolin products typically formulated into adhesives and sealants. Click on the name of a product to see more specific information (requires a pdf reader).

  • SK-T 22: This product is a hydrous clay, with greater than 84% of the particles finer than 2 microns. This higher brightness, fine particle size with narrow particle size distribution gives good optical properties to this product. SK-T 22 helps maintain flow, leveling, and film strength, while also providing exceptional wet strength to adhesive formulations.
  • SK-T 63: This kaolin clay is a very cost effective, low brightness, moderately fine particle size filler clay. When SK-T 63 is added to an adhesive formulation, it can provide the desired viscosity, opacity, whiteness, reduced slump, and improved barrier properties of the adhesive. This product is best suited for water based systems.
  • SK-T 49: This product is an excellent, cost effective, and functional filler. It performs remarkably well at filling voids in the substrate and providing whiteness. SK-T 49 is an ideal choice when a non-white material is desired as it requires less pigment to overcome its inherent whiteness. The product is ideally suited for water and solvent based systems.
  • SK-T 13: This delaminated clay provides excellent TiO2 extension, opacity, and barrier properties to adhesive and sealant formulations. Its ability to provide rheology modification at low use levels makes it an excellent choice for cost effective systems. It is highly platy with a high aspect ratio, giving the adhesive film improved strength compared to other, blocky fillers. Additionally, this platy structure creates a natural barrier to gases, oils, and moistures by creating a tortuous path network.
